2008 was the first year an alternative league was constructed using 40 teams. The league does not use Reserve hitters and reduces the number of starting pitchers from 4 to 3, allowing the maintenance of a 2-1 hitting/pitching ratio.

Hitters are selected for this league based on their plate appearances.

Starting pitchers are chosen on the basis of innings pitched.

Relief pitchers in the Best Player leagues have been chosen in different ways from year to year. It still varies, but starting in 2006, the criteria for inclusion were: all the leading Save men; top 20 relievers as determined by the Hardball program; the rest of the players chosen by number of appearances.
